Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread muscle and joint pain, stiffness and fatigue. It may also cause lack of mental focus, clumsiness and memory problems. This condition affects up to 6 million people in the United States, 90 percent of whom are women, according to the website My Fibro. There is no cure for fibromyalgia; however, avoiding certain foods may help alleviate pain and joint stiffness associated with this condition.

Refined Sugars and Flours

Avoid products containing refined sugars and flours, advises the University of Maryland Medical Center. These include white breads and pastas, cakes, doughnuts, candy bars and pastries, as well as many packaged convenience meals and fast foods. Your body converts refined flours and sugars into glucose quickly. An overload of glucose can be toxic to your body, and may increase muscle pain and inflammation associated with fibromyalgia. Also, glucose spikes are typically followed by energy crashes, which can worsen the effects of fatigue.

Saturated Fats

Avoid foods that are high in saturated fats, including dairy products, eggs and red meats such as pork and beef. Fast foods, especially fried items such as onion rings, french fries and breaded fish are also typically high in saturated fats. These fats may increase muscle inflammation and fibromyalgia pain, according to Dr. James Balch and Phyllis Balch, authors of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." Saturated fats also contribute to high cholesterol, and may decrease blood circulation, preventing your muscles and joints from obtaining necessary nutrients.

Solanine-rich Foods

Stay away from foods that contain solanine, which is a chemical compound that inhibits the activity of necessary enzymes in your muscles. These enzymes help prevent muscle inflammation and pain, according to "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." White potatoes, tomatoes, green bell peppers and eggplants all contain solanine.

Caffeine-containing Foods and Beverages

Avoid foods and beverages that contain caffeine, including chocolate, coffee, tea and soft drinks. Caffeine can interfere with restful sleep, preventing your body from repairing muscle and connective tissue cells, according to "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." This can increase pain and stiffness associated with fibromyalgia. Foods and beverages containing this chemical compound can also increase fatigue.
