How Do You Eat Low Carb at Fast Food Restaurants?

Low carbohydrate diets, such as Atkins and the South Beach Diet, require that you limit the number of carbohydrates that you consume on a daily basis. When you are eating out of the house at a fast food restaurant, you may need to make some adjustments in order to stick with your low-carb diet.

Step 1

Fill up on salad. McDonald's and Wendy's both carry a line of salad choices. Request low-fat dressing and remember to skip the croutons.

Step 2

Look for meat options that have not been breaded. Breaded chicken from fast food restaurants can contain a high carbohydrate count. At KFC, you can now get a bucket of grilled chicken instead of the traditional breaded and fried version. Also, if you want a particular type of meat from a sandwich, ask that it be served without the bun.

Step 3

Skip the fries. Most fast food meals will come with fries on the side, a food very high in carbohydrates. Instead, request a side salad or fruit salad. Burger King now has apple fries available to order.

Step 4

Eat a bread-free breakfast. For breakfast, you can order meat scrambles and egg options without the bread. These are available at McDonald's and Hardee's. Avoid the meal option for breakfast entrees since most of them come with a side of hash browns.
