Glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM are all supplements that help arthritis sufferers in easing pain, reducing inflammation and improving mobility. They are available separately but are often combined into one supplement.
Glucosamine
Glucosamine is a naturally occurring chemical in the body that helps build cartilage and may therefore relieve pain. It is especially useful for osteoarthritis, a condition in which there is joint damage.
Chondroitin
Chondroitin is found in connective tissues of the bone and cartilage. It blocks enzymes that can destroy cartilage while enhancing collagen protection. This helps protect joints, ease pain and reduce inflammation.
MSM
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a compound made up of sulfur and methyl. It seems to inhibit pain impulses on nerve fibers, reducing inflammation and easing pain in muscles and joints.
Considerations
The Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT), which followed 357 people from around the U.S., showed participants who had the most benefit to their joints were taking glucosamine alone rather than in combination.
Warning
Consult with a health professional before taking any supplements, because they can be harmful to some. Glucosamine, for example, is often made from shellfish and could be dangerous to anyone with a seafood allergy.
