Baking chocolate is a type of bitter, unsweetened chocolate used in a variety of recipes, such as for brownies, cookies and candies. It comes in different forms, including solid squares, miniature bits and liquid. Calories vary depending on the manufacturer and form.
Calories Per Ounce
One ounce of liquid baking chocolate contains 134 calories, and one square of solid baking chocolate has 146 calories, according to the Calorie Database. Mexican baking chocolate is slightly lower in calories: about 121 calories per 1 oz. square.
Source of Calories
Nearly all the calories in baking chocolate come from the 13 g to 16 g of fat per ounce, and over half of that fat is saturated. Less than 10 percent of your daily calories should come from saturated fats, according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
Benefits
The University of Michigan explains that dark chocolate, including baking chocolate, is a good source of antioxidants called flavonoids, which may lower "bad" cholesterol and increase blood flow to the heart. To counteract the bitterness and avoid over-indulgence, try dipping a couple of strawberries in melted baking chocolate.
