If you have ever thought of reinventing yourself by purchasing a wig or having hair extensions attached, it is important to educate yourself about the different types of hair products available. For instance, products made of synthetic hair may be an option if you are looking for an affordable change that does not require a lot of maintenance.

Synthetic Fiber

Synthetic fiber is the most common kind of fiber that is used in the manufacture of non-human hair wigs, hair pieces and extensions. According to Surviving-Hairloss.com, wigs made of synthetic hair are less expensive than human hair wigs, and, depending on the type of synthetic fiber used in the production of the hair, can also look just as realistic. Synthetic fibers are usually made from nylon, rayon, acetate and acrylic.

Care

Synthetic hair must be kept clean and free of tangles in order for it to look its best. Detangling can be done with a wide-tooth comb that is especially designed for use on synthetic hair. BeautyInk.com explains that the hair should then be placed in warm water and massaged with a mild shampoo. The synthetic hair can then be rinsed with cool water and placed on a towel to air dry.

Styling and Coloring

Hair that is made from synthetic fibers cannot be heat-styled or colored. Hair color will not penetrate the synthetic fiber, and high heat will cause the synthetic fiber to singe or burn. In fact, most wigs are manufactured with a set texture and style that mimics naturally straight, curly or wavy hair. Therefore, synthetic fibers cannot be blown dry, straightened with a flat iron or curled with hot rollers or a curling iron.

Kanekalon and Toyokalon Fiber

Kanekalon and toyokalon synthetic hair products are made of high quality "monofibers" that are designed to look and feel like real human hair. Synthetic hair made of both of these fibers is preferred over synthetic hair made of ordinary synthetic fibers for the application of permanent hair extensions. Hair extensions made of synthetic fibers can easily tangle and are very difficult to keep from frizzing. But synthetic hair extensions made of kanekalon or toyokalon fibers are not prone to such problems.

Transplantation

Men and women who are concerned with hair loss may opt to have hair transplant surgery performed. Hair transplant procedures have changed significantly over the years, utilizing techniques that offer a much more realistic result. The Bernstein Medical Center for Hair Restoration reports that in the earlier days of hair transplantation, synthetic hair was sometimes used. However, health complications such as pain and infection resulted in the United States banning any type of hair transplant surgery that involves the use of synthetic hair.
