Magnets for Weight Loss

Large numbers of Americans are overweight or obese, making weight loss solutions an important public health concern. Alternative medicine practitioners claim that use of magnetic properties can promote weight loss. Small magnets placed on the ears allegedly reduce the appetite and cause significant weight loss.

History

In the 1950s, a French doctor named Dr. Nogier mapped the correspondence between specific points on the ear to particular body points. Acupuncturists used this map to relieve pain and illness originating from specific parts of the body. The technique expanded to include small magnets placed on the ear that purportedly promote weight loss.

Theories/Speculation

Supporters of magnetic weight loss believe the theory of bio-magnetism explains the efficacy of ear magnets for weight loss. Magnets are thought to increase rates of cellular respiration, speeding the process of nutrient breakdown. By breaking down carbohydrates and fats more rapidly, the body consumes more calories. This boost in cellular respiration ultimately causes weight loss.

Features

The parts of the ear corresponding to weight loss centers are on the inner part of the ear. To stimulate weight loss, wear two magnets on each ear for 30 to 60 minutes per day. The website Pro-Thinspo recommends placing the magnets on no more than four points per day, as stimulating more areas may cause adverse effects. A typical course of magnetic weight loss treatment lasts six weeks. After six weeks of wearing the magnets, take two weeks off before resuming the bio-magnetism process.

Considerations

Proponents claim that ear magnets cause suppression of appetite, feelings of fullness, digestive regularity and reduced anxiety. Because your ears contain dozens of points that purportedly map onto body parts, consult an acupuncturist or alternative medicine practitioner to locate the precise ear locations that correspond to weight loss.

Warning

There is little scientific evidence to support the theory of bio-magnetism or the use of magnets for weight loss. The Weight Loss Professional website notes that a scientific study of bio-magnetism found no evidence to suggest that bio-magnetism facilitates weight loss. Reducing overall caloric intake and boosting physical activity levels promote safe, healthy weight loss. Talk to your doctor or a nutritionist to find a weight loss solution that is appropriate for your condition.
