A glycolic acid peel is a type of skin treatment to help improve the appearance of your skin. Chemicals are applied to the target area in a doctor's office and results can last for months. Generally, side effects are minimal and glycolic acid peels work for most skin types.

Glycolic Peels

Glycolic acid is a type of alpha hydroxy acid and is isolated from sugarcane, sugar beets, pineapple, cantaloupe and unripe grapes. Commonly performed by a dermatologist or other trained professional, glycolic acid peels are a lighter peel used to remove dead and damaged upper skin layers by causing the top layers of skin to separate and peel off.

Candidates

You should consult a dermatologist to find out if you are a good candidate for a chemical peel, but the American Academy of Dermatology states that patients with a history of fever blisters, cold sores or keloids should take precautions before undergoing a glycolic acid peel. People with a history of brownish discolorations or women who take birth control or have been pregnant, as well as people with certain skin types may develop temporary or permanent skin color changes. People with mild skin imperfections benefit the most from glycolic acid peels.

Benefits

Glycolic acid peels encourage new cell regeneration and help improve skin tone. They can aid in reducing mild acne scars and fine lines and can help unclog pores, resulting in fewer acne breakouts. Because a glycolic peel is considered a light peel, it can help relieve chronic dry skin and uneven pigmentation but is not the best choice for eliminating deep wrinkles or age spots. Glycolic peels cannot tighten loose, sagging skin.

Duration of Benefits

According to OnlineSurgery, benefits of a glycolic peel can last from several months to years, although the results of a deeper peel tend to last longer. Several applications over a period of several months may be necessary to achieve optimal results with a glycolic acid peel.

Maximizing Benefits

Proper sun protection is the key to maximizing the benefits gained from a glycolic acid peel. You should use a sunscreen with at least an SPF of 25 or more to prevent sunburn and avoid additional sun damage. Additionally, using harsh exfoliants and abrasive sponges after a glycolic peel can damage delicate skin cells.
