Foods Containing Acid

In order to remain healthy, the body has to keep a slightly alkaline balance. However, many of the foods we eat each day are full of acid, which can skew your blood pH to the acidic side. An acidic blood pH can lead to numerous health issues including heart disease and cancer. Knowing which foods are acidic can give you a greater ability to avoid them in the future.

Fruits

Many kinds of fruits are acidic. The first thing that pops into most people's heads is citrus fruit. However, citrus is only acidic outside of the body, then it becomes alkaline in your digestive tract. Fruits such as blueberries, cranberries and plums are actually acidic and should only be eaten in moderation.

Vegetables

While most vegetables are alkaline, a few vegetable products contain acid as well. Examples include olives, lentils and corn.

Beans & Nuts

While good for you in the sense that they provide fiber and protein, beans, nuts and legumes can be quite acidic. Primary offenders include red beans, black beans, kidney beans, soy beans, chick peas, pinto beans, peanuts, pecans, cashews, walnuts and tahini.

Meats

Just about every meat product you can think of is acidic. The biggest culprits include beef, pork, poultry, shellfish and fish. Organ meats are the most acidic of all and should be eaten on only the rarest occasions.

Grains

Most grains contain some amount of acidity, meaning you should include them in your diet in only smaller quantities. Grains you should pay particular attention to include flour, wheat, oats, bran, rice, barley, kamut and rye. Specific products to look out for are pasta, breads and crackers.

Other Acidic Foods

Numerous other food products and additives are acidic and should be avoided altogether if you can help it. Artificial sweeteners, coffee, soda and alcohol can dramatically change your blood pH level when consumed regularly.
