The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says some 350,000 women underwent breast augmentation procedures in 2007. There are also claims that breast enlargement can be as simple as taking a pill. A number of online companies sell breast enhancement pills they maintain can enhance your breasts by as much as three cup sizes in only three months. According to the Mayo Clinic, there is no credible data to support these assertions that natural breast enhancement supplements will result in larger breasts.

Effects

A number of herbs (fenugreek, virana, katrina root) have been used throughout history to increase the supply of breast milk in lactating women. Herbs such as wild yams, red clover and black cohosh have been taken to encourage healthy breast tissue and possibly cure certain breast disorders. But these and other supplements will not change the size of your breasts.

Claims

Several manufacturers tout an assortment of herbal blends as natural breast enhancers. Some insist that their product will radically increase breast size. These enhancers contain phytoestrogens (naturally occurring plant chemicals that can act like the female hormone estrogen), which are supposed to fool your body into thinking it's pregnant. The theory is that your breasts will get larger as they would during pregnancy but without producing milk.

Regulation

Most breast enhancement supplements contain herbal ingredients and therefore do not require approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. That means they are not regulated for effectiveness or safety.

Risks

Breast enhancement supplements may be hazardous to your health. According to Cornell University, since phytoestrogens can have estrogen-like effects, use of the supplements for an extended period could increase the risk of breast cancer.

Side Effects & Safety

Several herbal supplements can interact with medications, reducing their potency and absorption and possibly cause negative side effects. Since the long-term effects of some of the herbs contained in breast enhancement pills have not yet been documented, data is limited as to their overall safety.
