When people think of salsa, tomato salsa with a bit of a bite is the type that often comes to mind first. But there are many kinds of salsa, according to Food.com. The site lists 9,462 salsa recipes.

Ingredients

Food.com describes a typical tomato-based salsa as containing tomatoes, cilantro, onion, green pepper, lemon or lime juice, chili peppers or jalapeno peppers, garlic, salt and pepper. In other words, this type of salsa contains mostly fresh, nutritious and low-calorie ingredients.

Calories

A typical serving of tomato-based salsa would be about 3 1/2 oz. This amount of salsa typically contains between 20 and 33 calories, according to CalorieKing.

Nutrition

The same amount of salsa contains virtually no fat, but may contain a lot of sodium, depending on how much salt you add. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Nutrition Database reports that it is also a rich source of nutrients like calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, beta carotene and lycopene as well as vitamins A, C, E and K.
