Snap beans, also called green beans or string beans, are a popular vegetable in both markets and home vegetable gardens, offering crunch and mild flavor to appeal to even picky eaters. Like most vegetables, their low-calorie content makes them a healthy staple for dieters.

Calories

One cup of cooked fresh snap beans contains 30 calories, according to the University of Illinois Extension. More than 90 percent of the calories in snap beans come from carbohydrates.

Nutrients

In addition to being a good source of carbohydrates, snap beans are a moderate source of fiber, protein, vitamin C and beta-carotene, says the University of Illinois Extension.

Preparation

Snap beans are popular in creamy casseroles and marinated in oil and dressing for cold bean salads, but these dishes typically contain hundreds of calories. To enjoy snap beans without adding unnecessary calories, steam them for three to five minutes and squeeze fresh lemon juice over them before serving.
