The body is at its healthiest when it's slightly alkaline; that is, the blood pH level is somewhere around 7.35. However, many of the foods we eat every day are highly acidic and lacking in nutrients, which can cause an acidic pH balance. Acidity in the body is a breeding ground for diseases such as cancer and heart disease. To lessen the effects of acidic foods in the body, you will need to modify your lifestyle quite significantly.
Step 1
Use a Hydrion test paper to figure out your current body pH level. These tests are readily available and can be used to test your urine or saliva. Either way, you will get a rough idea of your current pH, so you know what you have to work with. Anything below 7.0 is considered acidic.
Step 2
Stay hydrated. By drinking at least eight 8 oz. glasses of water a day, you keep your body flushed of toxins and help maintain an alkaline balance. You can even add an alkaline supplement to your water for an added boost.
Step 3
Eat highly alkaline foods. A healthy balance is a diet that's 80 percent alkaline and 20 percent acidic. Examples of foods you can eat to put your pH back into balance include avocado, garlic, asparagus, spinach, kamut, soy, tomatoes, radishes and sprouts. Some fruits are neutral and OK to eat moderately. Highly acidic foods should be avoided or eaten only in moderation. Examples include most meats, cheese, artificial sweeteners, sugar, coffee, alcohol and breads.
Step 4
Be kind to your digestive tract. Instead of eating three big meals, eat five or six smaller ones. Thoroughly chew your food before swallowing and eat slowly. Make sure your diet is rich in fiber and take a probiotic supplement to maintain proper digestive health.
Step 5
Reduce your stress level. Because constant stress can elevate your acid level, try to take the pressure off of yourself and know when to relax. Take deep breaths when feeling overwhelmed and take out time for yourself each day to relax and meditate or do whatever makes you feel most comfortable.
Step 6
Get plenty of exercise. Daily exercise helps to keep your body's pH level balanced and on the alkaline side. All you need is 30 minutes a day to keep your body healthy.
