Urinary tract infections are characterized by inflammation of your bladder or urethra and can result in frequent urination, fever and pain in the groin or lower abdomen. Most urinary tract infections are caused by Escherichia coli bacteria, which live in your intestines, according to Dr. James Balch and Phyllis Balch, authors of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." Although diet cannot replace traditional medicine for urinary tract infections, certain foods may help manage symptoms and speed healing of this condition. Check with your doctor if you plan to change your diet to combat a urinary tract infection.
Cranberry Juice
Cranberry juice is an effective remedy for urinary tract infections, according to Michael Castleman, author of "Nature's Cures." This juice contains a chemical compound, called hippuric acid, which may help acidify the urine in your bladder and urinary tract. This may help destroy the Escherichia coli bacteria that causes urinary tract infections. Drink at least 16 oz. of fresh cranberry juice each day to help combat and prevent urinary tract infections, according to Castleman. Avoid bottled cranberry juice that contains added sugars, which may impair your body's ability to destroy bacteria.
Vitamin E-Rich Foods
Foods rich in vitamin E may help stimulate your immune system and destroy urinary tract bacteria, according to the Balches. Vitamin E is also a potent antioxidant that may help prevent free radical molecules from damaging the walls of your urinary tract. This vitamin may help your body repair urinary tract cells damaged by infection. You can obtain vitamin E from food sources such as whole wheat pastas and breads, eggs, olive and vegetable oil, kale, lentils, spinach and watercress.
Calcium- and Magnesium-Rich Foods
Foods rich in calcium and magnesium may help reduce the symptoms of urinary tract infections, according to the Balches. Calcium helps reduce inflammation of the bladder, kidneys and urethra. Magnesium aids in the absorption of calcium and is necessary for the production of anti-stress hormones that can ease urinary tract pain. Calcium is available in foods such as milk, cheese, broccoli, salmon and spinach. You can obtain magnesium from beef, fish, avocados, brown rice, walnuts, bananas and apples.
