Duodenal ulcers are one of several different types of ulcers, which form along the digestive tract. Food and stress do not cause the ulcers. Instead, a bacterial infection known as Helicobacter pylori, or H. pylori, is commonly associated with the condition. However, there is not a specific diet to follow when suffering from a duodenal ulcer. Focusing your dietary habits on specific foods may increase healing time and prevent future ulcers.
Flavonoids
Eat foods rich in flavonoids, suggests the University of Maryland Medical Center. These foods include apples, celery, cranberries, onions and garlic, as they may inhibit H. pylori growth. Flavonoids are also present in cranberry juice and tea. Chamomile tea has a soothing effect on inflamed and irritated mucous membranes. According to the University of Michigan Health Center, drinking 2 to 3 cups a day may decrease bacterial growth.
High-fiber Foods
Consuming foods high in fiber may slow down movement of food and acid from the stomach to the intestines. High-fiber foods only help with duodenal ulcers, and not stomach ulcers, advises the University of Michigan Health Center. Continuing a high-fiber diet after your duodenal ulcer has healed greatly decreases ulcer recurrences. Fruits and vegetables continue high amounts of fiber. One cup of raspberries contains about 8 g of fiber. Legumes, nuts and seeds contain large fiber amounts. One cup of black beans contains 15 g of fiber and split peas contain 16.3 g of fiber. Opt for fiber-rich plant foods instead of taking supplements. These foods also contain flavonoids and antioxidants, which are not present in fiber supplements.
Bland Foods
Avoid foods rich in spices and acid. These foods do not cause a duodenal ulcer, but may increase symptoms and pain associated with the condition. Opt for plain breads, pastas and rice. Don't eat foods seasoned with chili powder, mustard seed, nutmeg or other herbs and spices that may be irritating. If you have any food allergens, theses foods should also be avoided.
Cabbage Juice
Drinking cabbage juice may accelerate the healing of ulcers. The University of Michigan Health System reports that research also suggests that drinking up to a quart of cabbage juice per day for 10 to 14 days is necessary to relieve the symptoms of ulcers. Add carrot juice for additional flavor.
