Keeping your skin looking youthful can seem challenging, but not if you know what to use. Certain anti-aging products are formulated with active ingredients that have been proven to work. Always use the product as instructed by the packaging. Using the right cream can help promote collagen growth while it improves your skin's texture and hydration. Should an allergic reaction occur, discontinue use immediately.

Hydroxy Acid Skin Creams

Hydroxy acids are natural acids derived from a fruit. There are three different forms, or types, of hydroxy acids: alpha, beta and poly hydroxy acids, according to the Mayo Clinic. Hydroxy acids work by removing the surface layer of dead skin cells and promote the growth of new, smoother, younger-looking skin. This is why so many manufacturers include hydroxy acids in anti-aging creams, because they work effectively to provide you with a more youthful appearance. Since a product containing hydroxy acid makes your skin more sensitive to the sun, the Mayo Clinic recommends wearing sunscreen for at least seven days after using a hydroxy acid product.

Tea Extract Skin Creams

Tea extracts contain anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, according to the Mayo Clinic. The anti-inflammatory properties help sooth irritated and puffy skin. The antioxidants help destroy free radicals, which can damage your skin. Many anti-aging wrinkle skin creams contain either green tea, oolong or black tea extracts. Of the three different types of tea extracts, the Mayo Clinic reports that green tea extracts are the most commonly used. Avoid using tea extracts if you have any known allergies to tea leaves or tea extracts.

Retinol Skin Creams

Retinol, derived from vitamin A, is another common compound used in anti-aging wrinkle skin creams, according to the Mayo Clinic. Vitamin A contains antioxidant-like properties, which help neutralize free radicals caused by things such as sunburn. Vitamin A may also help reverse your skin's natural aging process, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Retinol is the first over-the-counter antioxidant to be widely used in anti-aging wrinkle skin creams. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, avoid using vitamin A derivatives, as they may increase chances of birth defects. Stronger forms of retinol are available via prescription, such as tretinoin, and contain a much more concentrated dose of this active ingredient.
