Foods for Persons on Chemotherapy

Eating a healthy diet is important when undergoing chemotherapy. However; cancer patients who undergo chemotherapy often have side effects such as sores in the mouth that make it painful to eat, or they maybe nauseated or do not have an appetite. Finding foods that are appealing can help improve the patient's quality of life, reports the American Cancer Society.

Antioxidant Rich Foods

Antioxidants are compounds that include vitamin C, vitamin E, carotenoids and phytochemicals. According to authors Sizer and Whitney of the book, "Nutrition Concepts and Controversies" antioxidants are responsible for preventing damage to the body's cells. Antioxidants can be found in fruits and vegetables such as citrus fruits and dark green vegetables. Further research is needed to conclude if antioxidants help prevent cancer or destroy cancer cells. The American Cancer Society recommends that when undergoing chemotherapy, cancer patients should not exceed the Daily Value of 100 percent for antioxidants and not take any supplements without speaking to a doctor.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are an essential nutrient to the body that provides energy and can be found in fruits and vegetables as well as plants. Breads, pastas, cereals and rice are often well tolerated by chemotherapy patients. Carbs are easily digested and generally do not cause any digestive problems. Plain toast and soda crackers can help alleviate nausea. Simple meals made with mostly carbohydrates like macaroni and cheese or chicken noodle soup are easily digested. Eating small meals or snacks throughout the day may help reduce nausea and will keep the stomach from being completely empty.

Protein

Protein is another essential element needed to make new tissue and repair muscles. Protein also helps replace old cells and help support the immune system, writes Sizer and Whitney. Protein can be found in dairy products, legumes, meats, poultry and fish. Protein from animal sources are the easiest to digest and absorbed best by the body. Legumes such as beans, peas and lentils are not as easily digested or absorbed and may cause digestive problems, especially for those undergoing chemotherapy. When preparing animal products such as eggs, beef or chicken it is important to cook thoroughly to prevent food illnesses.
