Mullein, also referred to as Verbascum densiflorum, is a plant used for medicinal purposes. The large leafy, green plant has tall, yellow flowers. You can boil the leaves and make a tea to help reduce chest congestion or to treat diarrhea. Using the flowers to make oil may help treat medical conditions, such as ear infections, hemorrhoids and mouth ulcers. Mullein oil may have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, expectorant and antiseptic properties. While using the flowers and leaves from the plants may help alleviate discomfort, the seeds are toxic, according to Herbal Remedies Info.

Step 1

Gather fresh mullein flowers after the morning dew evaporates and before the day heats up. Growing the plant allows access to the flowers for making oil. Although native to Asia, North Africa and Europe, the plant grows throughout the United States in undisturbed soil that has abundant light, according to The Herbal Resource.

Step 2

Crush the mullein flowers in a blender or with a mortar and pestle. Place into a clean glass jar.

Step 3

Fill the jar with enough olive oil to completely cover the mullein flowers.

Step 4

Leave the solution in a sunny location for two weeks, shaking often.

Step 5

Strain the flowers from the oil. Get more flowers and repeat the process three more times, using the same oil for stronger oil, according to Herbal Remedies Info.

Step 6

Use a dropper to place a few drops into the affected ear, mouth sores or hemorrhoid several times a day.

Step 7

Store the oil in a cool, dry, dark location for up to two years.
