Deer meat is often called venison, however the term venison can also refer to elk, caribou, moose or reindeer meat, according to The Cook's Thesaurus. Deer is slightly leaner than elk and should be cooked to medium rare to retain tenderness.

Calories

Ground deer is a mix of cuts from different parts of the animal. A grilled 3-oz. portion, about the size of a card deck, contains 134 calories with 103 coming from protein and 31 from fat, reports the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Comparison

A two-egg entree is similar in calories to a 3-oz. portion of ground deer. The eggs provide half the protein and three times the fat of the deer meat.

Saturated Fat

Saturated fat contributes to heart disease, reports MayoClinic.com, which recommends that adults limit their saturated fat intake to less than 15 g per day. Two eggs contain 22 percent of your daily recommended saturated fat limit, while the 3-oz. portion of deer contains 14 percent of your daily limit.
