Bob Greene is the creator of the Best Life plan and explains that food is only part of the puzzle to weight loss. Physical activity, support and understanding how emotions and foods are often intertwined are also needed to reach and maintain a healthy weight. The Best Life plan is a lifestyle change rather than a diet, and it promotes eating healthy, natural foods.

Dairy Products

Dairy products can contain a high amount of cholesterol and fat, but they also contain calcium, which is an essential nutrient to keeping bones healthy, write Frances Sizer and Eli Whitney of the book, "Nutrition Concepts and Controversies." The Best Life plan allows for low-fat dairy products such as cheese that doesn't contain more than 5 g of fat and 75 calories per ounce. Swiss cheese and reduced-fat cheddar are healthier cheese options. Skim milk low-fat or fat-free yogurt and eggs are also part of the Best Life plan. Margarine that is made without partially hydrogenated oil can be used in this plan.

Meat, Poultry and Fish

Meat and poultry contain nutrients such as protein and iron. Protein is needed to build and repair muscles and iron is needed for healthy red blood cells and aids in the prevention on anemia. The Best Life plan allows for chicken and turkey with the skin removed. Leaner cuts of meat such as sirloin, tenderloin, flank steak or ground beef that is at least 90 percent lean may be included. Fish contains essential omega 3 fatty acids that may reduce the risk of developing heart disease, reports the University of Maryland Medical Center. Healthy fish on the Best Life plan include trout, salmon, bluefish and Atlantic mackerel.

Fruits and Vegetables

The Best Life plan recommends eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables for a healthy diet. Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins and minerals that aren't found in other food sources and are low in calories and high in fiber. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, those who eat the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables for their age and sex have a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, stroke and some types of cancer. The Best Life plan suggests Romaine lettuce, kale, spinach, chard, mushrooms, broccoli, tomatoes, bananas, grapes and oranges be on hand for meals and snacks.
