Pandemics refer to infectious diseases that spread easily between people, regardless of their location. The Centers for Disease Control has created specific precautionary policies in schools and in the workplace to prevent such an influenza outbreak from occurring.
Step 1
Wash your hands with soap and water after going to the bathroom and being outside. Scrub your nails, the backs of your hands, and in between fingers for 10 to 15 seconds.
Step 2
Rinse and dry your hands well.
Step 3
Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizing gel if you do not have soap and water available.
Step 4
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth as this is a common way the influenza virus is spread.
Step 5
Cover your nose and mouth when you cough. Wash your hands immediately.
Step 6
Stay away from sick people and avoid crowded places where the influenza virus can lurk.
Step 7
Stay at home if you are sick and go to the doctor to be treated with antivirals if necessary.
Step 8
Wear a mask, especially if you are immunocompromised (unable to fight infection).
Step 9
Use a mouthpiece if you have to perform CPR.
Step 10
Visit your local public health website to determine which areas in the world are infected. Avoid traveling to the affected areas.
Step 11
Clean frequently touched surfaces like the phone and remote control with disinfectants to prevent the potential spread of influenza.
Step 12
Get vaccinated with the influenza vaccine and report whether you or your family members are infected to your local public health department.
