Asthma is a common disease affecting your airways. According to the Mayo Clinic, airways in your lung become tight and inflamed. As this constriction ensues, airways begin producing a mucus that blocks oxygen from getting to your lungs. You have trouble breathing and need treatment fast. An asthma inhaler can serve as rescue treatment when you have an asthma flareup.
Step 1
Remove the cap from the metered-dose inhaler and shake the inhaler to mix the medication well.
Step 2
Press on the inhaler to make sure it puffs out medication.
Step 3
Sit up straight and lift your chin with your eyes looking toward the ceiling. This opens your airways.
Step 4
Take a couple of breaths and slowly breathe out. Immediately, put the inhaler's mouthpiece in your mouth. Make sure your lips are securely fastened around the mouthpiece. Do not clench the mouthpiece with your teeth.
Step 5
Breathe in deeply and slowly for three to five seconds and press the inhaler at the same time.
Step 6
Hold your breath for 10 seconds.
Step 7
Wait for 30 seconds and repeat Steps 3 to 6 for another puff of medication. Follow the dose your doctor prescribed.
Step 8
Place the cap on the mouthpiece.
Tips and Warnings
- Clean your inhaler at least once a week. If you are a child, you can use a spacer device with the metered-dose inhaler to make the process easier. If you don't have a good grip on the inhaler, use both hands to handle it.
- Do not share inhalers with other people. Do not take more puffs from the metered-dose inhaler than prescribed.
