Acne is a common skin condition that can affect anyone but most commonly affects teens and menopausal women. It is non-contagious skin disorder that causes pimples or blackheads to form on the surface of the skin. Jojoba oil is a plant extract that has been used medicinally for centuries. When applied to the skin, it may help prevent acne.

Jojoba

The Jojoba plant is an evergreen shrub native to the Sonora Desert in northwest Mexico. The shrub grows to a height of 15 feet and has a life span of between 100 and 200 years. According to Herb 2000, the plant's seeds contain jojoba oil. Its compounds are beneficial for moisturizing and rehydrating the skin. It also has anti-inflammatory properties.

Effects

According to Herb 2000, jojoba oil can smooth the skin and help it retain moisture. It also improves the skin's elasticity and can reduce the visible effects of aging. Jojoba oil differs from skin products containing lanolin, vegetable oil or petroleum because it is not sticky.

Benefits for Acne

According to Acne Talks, jojoba oil is known as the "little miracle" in the realm of skin care. It is believed to reduce the sebaceous gland's production of oil and helps to break down the dirt, oil, and bacteria that blocks pores and can lead to acne. It is non-greasy and is easily absorbed by the skin. This can help the pores and hair follicles function properly and reduce the risk of further outbreaks of acne.

Identification

The best time to apply jojoba oil is after you have taken a shower or a bath. Dry your face and gently rub a few drops of jojoba oil on your face. Use pure jojoba oil or apply jojoba oil that is blended with tea tree oil or lavender oil, as these essential oils have antibacterial properties that are suitable for treating acne.

Warning

As of 2010, there are no reported side effects from the use of topical jojoba oil. At the same time, very little research has been done on its application. Consult your doctor before using jojoba oil as a treatment for acne.
