Now Acai Side Effects

Acai berry is a nutritious super-food from the Brazilian rain forests that is loaded with healthy amino acids, antioxidants, fiber and omega fats. Now Foods is a well-respected leader in the health food and dietary supplement industry. Side effects of acai berry are unlikely and rare, much like any natural food source. Since Now Foods offers pure freeze-dried acai pills, powder, liquid concentrate and minimally processed acai juice, side effects from impurities are unlikely. However, every individual body is different and some people may experience allergic reactions, hunger suppression, detoxification, weight loss, restlessness, frequent urination, stomach upset and/or diarrhea.

Now Acai Pills and Powder

Now Foods' whole acai berry extract provides 1,000 mg per two capsules. Acai pills are not associated with many side effects. However, some users may experience hunger suppression when taking Now Acai pills. Usually considered a beneficial side effect, this can be disastrous for those who are underweight or users who suffer from malnutrition from eating disorders. Acai pills are known for their energy-boosting properties. If taken right before bedtime, some might experience a feeling of restlessness or insomnia. In any form, acai berry can cause detoxification symptoms, including more frequent bowel movements, stomach discomfort and/or diarrhea. The same side effects can be triggered by one teaspoon of Now Acai powder, which delivers the same dosage of acai berry.

Now Acai Juice

Now Acai juice provide 6,500 mg per two tablespoons. This large dose, with 2 g of fiber per serving, could intensify detoxification side effects. Eliminating toxins is a healthy thing; however, it may prompt more frequent trips to the restroom. In addition, the 2 g of sugar per serving could increase blood glucose levels in insulin sensitive and/or diabetic individuals. With high amounts of vitamin C, such as in Now Acai Juice, some people may experience diuretic side effects. More frequent urination or diarrhea are common effects that may cause dehydration if left untreated. This product also contains pomegranate, blueberries and raspberries and could trigger berry allergies in those who are allergic.

Now Acai Liquid Concentrate

Now Acai liquid contains the equivalent of 35 g of acai berry per one tablespoon serving. For some this may amount to over-consumption, which can cause diarrhea and stomach upset, as with any whole fruit food source. While providing vast amounts of healthy antioxidants, this dosage may also produce a significant detoxification effect. Our bodies detoxify through the liver, kidneys, bowels and skin. Common detox symptoms are headache, skin rash and increased regularity. These side effects are uncommon with acai berry, but could be uncomfortable. In addition, a strong hunger suppressant effect from this large dose of acai could induce weight loss. Allergic reactions to pollen have been reported with acai use. Symptoms are mild and rare, but the likelihood of allergy aggravation increases with large concentrations of acai, such as those found in Now Acai concentrate.
