Ori Hofmekler says he believes that the key to weight loss is to eat like a warrior. Instead of sitting down for three square meals every day, Hofmekler, the editor-in-chief of Mind and Muscle Power magazine and a former member of the Israeli special forces, has created the Warrior Diet. The diet involves eating only one large meal a day and scavenge by eating fruit, vegetables and protein throughout the day. Consult a doctor before trying the Warrior Diet.
Significance
Hofmekler published the book "The Warrior Diet: Switch on Your Biological Powerhouse for High Energy, Explosive Strength, and a Leaner, Harder Body" in 2002. The book is recommended for men, but also contains a chapter for women who wish to follow the Warrior Diet. The diet is based on the principle that fasting during the day and eating a large meal at night might help you lose weight and have more energy. Hofmekler modeled his diet after the eating habits of ancient warriors who were required to hunt during the day and eat at night in order to survive.
Function
Hofmekler claims the Warrior Diet is effective because it helps the autonomic nervous system function properly. The sympathetic nervous system, which reacts in times of stress, will be triggered by fasting during the day, which will help burn calories and increase energy in the body. The parasympathetic nervous system kicks in when you eat a large meal at night, which helps the body digest, according to EveryDiet.org. By retraining your body to operate on a new cycle, you might more effectively digest food and burn fat.
Undereating Phase
During the under-eating phase, which occurs until you eat your large evening meal, your body will remain alert and energized, notes Hofmekler. The under-eating phase will also help detoxify the body. Eat living foods like fresh fruits and vegetables and fresh-squeezed fruit and vegetable juices. Drink mostly water during the under-eating phase, but you can also drink tea and coffee with no sugar added. During the under-eating phase, your body will burn fat, says Hofmekler.
Overeating Phase
During the over-eating phase, you are given the opportunity refuel your body and should overeat, says Hofmekler. Add as many different types of foods and aromas into your meal as possible, but start with the blander tasting foods and move on to spicier or stronger-tasting foods. Stop eating when you feel more thirsty than hungry.
Exercise Plan
In the Warrior Diet, Hofmekler recommends following an exercise plan that involves short, intense bursts of both aerobic and strength-training exercises. Hofmekler suggests following his exercise plan, called controlled-fatigue training, which will help the body resist fatigue and conserve energy throughout the day. While exercising, take deep breaths with your diaphragm to increase the amount of oxygen that flows through your bloodstream.
