Alcohol provides 7 calories per gram, according to dietitian Ellen Coleman, author of "Ultimate Sports Nutrition." Regardless of the type of alcoholic drink, such as beer, wine or hard liquor, all contain the same amount of energy per gram.
Beer and Wine
The amount of calories in any brand of beer or wine type depends on the amount of alcohol in a serving. A typical 12-oz. glass of beer has 145 calories, and a 4-oz. glass of rose red wine has 82 calories, according to CalorieKing. A 12-oz. glass of light beer has 110 calories, and a 4-oz. of burgundy wine has 102 calories.
Hard Liquor
Although hard liquor shots are small in volume, they contain a high concentration of alcohol. One shot of tequila has about 97 calories, according to CalorieKing. If you have five shots of tequila, then you have ingested 485 calories, which is equivalent to more than three 12-oz. glasses of regular beer or six glasses of red wine. Two ounces of whiskey or vodka contain 145 calories.
Cocktails
Cocktails or any mixed alcoholic drinks usually contain more calories than a glass or wine or beer because of the addition of other ingredients such as juice or syrup. A 12-ounce mai tai contains 200 to 300 calories, depending on the amount of rum and ice in the drink. An 8-oz. margarita has 370 calories and the same size pina colada has 430 calories.
