With the help of a support system and a smoking cessation tool like the nicotine patch, an individual can make their desire to stop smoking a reality. Before starting any plan to stop smoking, be sure to consult your medical care provider and any individuals close to you, such as a significant other. As your body goes through withdrawal symptoms from the reduction of nicotine you may struggle to maintain your discipline, but having your support system available can keep you on track. Any form of nicotine can still have health risks, according to FamilyDoctor.org.
Step 1
Purchase a nicotine patch product. According to American Family Physician, AAFP, smokers should typically start with a 15 to 22 mg nicotine patch. Eventually you will need to purchase a weaker patch containing 5 to 14 mg of nicotine.
Step 2
Remove the patch from the security-sealed package. Avoid touching the tacky side, as this can decrease the adherence.
Step 3
Place the patch on a clean, dry section of skin. Ideally this area will be mostly hair-free. Discreet and hairless areas may include the abdomen, upper arm or side. It may be necessary to cleanse the area with soap and water before application to remove lotions or other body products. Be sure the area is entirely dry before applying the patch.
Step 4
Allow the sticky side of the patch to touch your skin. Press the patch down so there are no bubbles or creases. Hold it with the palm of your hand for 10 seconds to ensure that it is adequately attached.
Step 5
Wash your hands with soap and water, as the nicotine from the patch can cause stinging if it comes in contact with your eyes or nose, according to FamilyDoctor.org.
Step 6
Keep the patch on for several hours. Depending upon the brand, this may be anywhere between 16 and 24 hours.
Step 7
Remove the old patch by pulling it off of your skin. Fold it in half to prevent it from attaching to anything else. Wash the area with soap and water.
Step 8
Apply a new patch following the same steps but use a different area of skin. Do not use the same area more than once per week, according to FamilyDoctor.org.
Step 9
Continue using the patch for four weeks unless directed differently by the product packaging or your doctor.
Step 10
Begin using the lower-dose nicotine patch during the fifth week. Continue using it for four weeks. Most nicotine products are safe for use for eight weeks. At the end of the eighth week users should be smoke-free.
Tips and Warnings
- Keep hard candies or other oral products nearby to occupy your mouth when you are craving a cigarette.
- If you experience any adverse reactions to the patch, you should contact a doctor immediately. A mild rash is common at the site of application.
