Incontinence, the loss of bladder control, affects millions of adults in the United States, according to the FamilyDoctor.org. Certain medications and diseases as well as an enlarged prostate are common factors that may cause male incontinence. While herbal treatments may help to eliminate or reduce the problem, it's always best to consult a doctor first for a diagnosis. In some cases, simple exercises and bladder training are all that is needed.

Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto is a historic tonic and antiseptic herb, derived from the fruits of small Florida palm trees. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine reports that its primary use is to treat urinary symptoms associated with BPH -- benign prostatic hyperplasia, or enlarged prostate. The herb may help relieve incontinence symptoms in men by reducing the activity of a certain enzyme that causes prostate problems, though studies are mixed regarding its efficacy. Available in various forms, such as liquid extracts, tablets, teas and capsules, saw palmetto is generally safe, though mild side effects such as stomach discomfort may occur.

Horsetail

Horsetail is thought to strengthen the urinary system and clear urinary tract infections, which can lead to incontinence in some men. In an article appearing on HealthCommunities.com, reviewed by Stanley J. Swierzewski, III, M.D., the herb is touted as an astringent and mild diuretic with tissue-healing properties, suitable for the treatment of incontinence. MedlinePlus warns the herb may be unsafe for long-term use and can cause problems for men with diabetes, low potassium, or low thiamine levels.

Cleavers

Cleavers, a member of a group of herbs from the genus Galium, is a cleansing herb that mildly stimulates the liver, according to Michael Vertolli, an herbalist and contributor to "Vitality" magazine. The herb has a diuretic effect, which may help to promote the flow of urine -- a helpful side effect for men with enlarged prostates and who have difficulty emptying their bladders. Fresh preparations of the herb are the most potent and include tinctures and juices. Cleavers is considered safe and can be used for several months without concern, notes Vertolli.
