Overview

Acai, resveratrol and pomegranate are three of the healthiest supplements available because they are high in free radical-fighting antioxidants. Acai berries come from the Brazilian rain forest and are one of the healthiest whole foods on Earth. Pomegranates are native to the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Resveratrol is a potent antioxidant extracted from red wine grapes and Japanese knotweed plant. All three may have many benefits for heart health, anti-aging and overall wellness. Acai, resveratrol and pomegrante have few known side effects. However, hunger suppression, detoxification, low blood sugar, low blood pressure, and/or drug interaction side effects may occur.

Resveratrol Side Effects

Resveratrol side effects are very rare. Anecdotal accounts report a stimulant-like buzz that may cause restlessness or insomnia if taken before bedtime. Increased blood pressure and heart palpitations have also been reported. Some users experience joint pains, urine coloration, hypersensitivity to hot and cold, numbness in the extremities, stomach cramps and diarrhea and/or acne. Resveratrol is likely to cause a detoxification effect due to its high antioxidant content. Detoxification can cause some of the symptoms above and may be responsible for their onset. Resveratrol is also known to lower blood sugar, which could present a problem for people who already experience hypoglycemia or chronic low blood sugar.

Pomegranate Side Effects

Pomegranate has a potent vasodilating, or blood vessel-widening effect, on the cardiovascular system. For most this is a healthy side effect; however, the resulting lower blood pressure may cause problems for some people. If you already experience low blood pressure, you may want to consult your doctor before using pomegranate supplements. In addition, pomegranate may interact with medications designed to lower blood pressure. A detoxification effect may also be experienced due to the high antioxidant content of pomegranate fruit. Over-consumption of pomegranates can lead to stomach upset, nausea, and diarrhea.

Acai Side Effects

Acai berries act have natural anti-inflammatory effects. The anthocyanin anitoxidants in acai berry block cyclo-oxgenase or COX enzymes, which lead to chronic inflammation. For this reason, acai may interact with over-the-counter and prescription COX-inhibiting drugs. Acai users report strong hunger suppression side effects, which is great for losing weight. For those who cannot afford to lose weight due to eating disorders or malnutrition, acai may not be the right choice. Mild pollen allergy aggravation has been seen with acai usage. Acai may further enhance the detoxification effect of pomegranate and resveratrol, due to its high fiber and antioxidant content.
