From alopecia to headaches, scalp massage has its benefits. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, therapeutic massage applied to the scalp can help increase blood circulation and reduce stress. You can perform a scalp massage anytime, anywhere, and no special equipment is necessary. In fact, the tips of your fingers are all you need to get the blood flowing to your scalp. Not only does a daily scalp massage feel terrific, you may also begin to notice a reduction in your symptoms.
Step 1
Hold your head in your hands with your upper forehead resting on the balls of your fingertips. Rotate your fingertips in a circular motion along your hairline.
Step 2
Apply slight pressure as you rotate your fingers. Use your right hand to massage the right side of your scalp and your left hand to massage the left side of your scalp.
Step 3
Continue the circular massage along your hairline, working your way behind your ears and down to the nape of your neck. Work your way around your entire scalp, stopping when you have covered every inch. Repeat the scalp massage at least twice a day.
Tips and Warnings
- Apply 2 tsp. of olive or almond oil to your hair while it is damp using your fingertips. An oil massage invigorates your scalp and moisturizes at the same time. You can also perform the scalp manipulations as you shampoo your hair. Brushing your hair with a soft-bristled hairbrush also helps increase circulation.
- Do not use your fingernails to massage your scalp. Sharp fingernails can damage the skin of your scalp.
