Designed for women, the SlimQuick line of diet supplements includes Ultra Fat Burner, Appetite Control, SlimQuick Hoodia and more. Hoodia gordonii is a common ingredient in weight loss supplements because it may have appetite suppressant effects. Research on the herb with humans is lacking, although scientists have a theory how it might work, according to Drugs.com. Consult a qualified health care provider before taking any diet supplements.

Identification

A succulent plant similar to a cactus, Hoodia gordonii grows naturally in the Kalahari Desert of southern Africa. An anthropologist observed the apparent appetite suppressant effects of this herb in the 1930s while studying the nomadic San Bushmen, who ate hoodia stems to prevent hunger during long hunting trips, notes Drugs.com.

Potential

Researchers have isolated an active ingredient in hoodia and named it P57, says Drugs.com. British pharmaceutical company Phytopharm has obtained a license for this potential appetite suppressant and is researching it for use as an anti-obesity medication. P57 appears to make the brain think the body is full even if the individual has not been eating.

Features

A three-caplet dose of SlimQuick Hoodia contains 550 mg of certified authentic South African hoodia, 500 mg calcium and 200 IU vitamin D3. The manufacturers say they added calcium and vitamin D to help women maintain bone health while losing weight, because weight loss in women often is associated with bone loss. SlimQuick Hoodia also contains green tea, which boosts metabolism. Because dietary supplements are not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, claims have not been substantiated.

Usage

Typical dosage for SlimQuick Hoodia is three caplets with 8 oz. of water before lunch and dinner, recommends the official website. For best results, use in combination with a sensible low-fat diet and don't snack after dinner. The website also advocates exercising regularly and drinking 10 8-oz. glasses of water every day.

Considerations

Hoodia appears safe for most people and no side effects have been identified, reports Drugs.com. Hoodia is not a stimulant, but Slimquick Hoodia contains caffeine because of the green tea component. Large amounts of caffeine can cause a rapid heart rate, restlessness, anxiety, tremors, excessive urination, nausea and insomnia. Consult a doctor before taking hoodia supplements if you have diabetes, a cardiovascular disorder or any type of eating disorder, or if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
