Bladder cancer is a disease caused by loss of normal control of cells lining the bladder, called transitional cells. These extra cells grow together and form masses called tumor. Scientists are unable to recognize the exact cause of bladder cancer; however, there are many factors that may contribute to its development, such as cigarette smoking, age, bladder infections and genetics. Bladder cancer is a significant cause of illness and death, especially when the cancer reaches its final stages. Herbs may be an important part of an integrated cancer care strategy for cancer in the bladder, but you must always consult with your health care provider before taking any herbal therapies to address your health problems.
Garlic
Garlic, scientifically known as Allium sativum, is a member of the onion family. It is widely cultivated for its pungent compound bulbs, called cloves, much used in cookery. The early use of garlic as an herbal remedy was recorded when Egyptian pyramids were built. A few epidemiological studies suggest that high intakes of garlic may protect against bladder cancer, according to Herbal Safety. Scientists are especially interested in the potential for organosulfur compounds derived from garlic, such as gamma-glutamylcysteines and cysteine sulfoxides or alliin in the prevention and treatment of various human malignancies, including bladder cancer.
Green Tea
Green tea, a brewed beverage made from the fresh leaves of Camellia sinensis plant, an evergreen shrub native to Asia, helps protect against or slow the growth of certain cancers, including bladder cancer, according to University of California. The polyphenols in green tea, especially epigallocatechin-3-gallate, or EGCG, appear to prevent the growth of bladder cancer cells by blocking the enzymes necessary for their growth.
Astragalus
Huang chi, commonly known as astragalus, is a perennial herb endemic to the elevated regions of the Chinese provinces such as Yunnan and Sichuan. Astragalus has more than 2,000 species, but two closely related species, namely Astragalus membranaceus and Astragalus mongholicus, are primarily used for health purposes. Astragalus contains a significantly higher level of substances that increase the number and the growth of immune cells and stimulate their response to disease, according to DePaul University. When your immune system is strong, it can fight off cancer and prolong your life. Astragalus is of growing importance as an adjunctive therapy in cancer.
