The blood type diet is a form of metabolic typing designed to improve your health by giving you a list of foods that work best for your body as determined by your blood type. Originally advocated by Dr. Peter D'Adamo, the premise is that your blood type is the key to the ability of the body to use lectins found in foods appropriately. Lectins are plant proteins that can act like antibodies and play a role in biological recognition. Dr. D'Adamo believes that the lectins in foods react differently to different blood types and can be incompatible and harmful to the body.

Blood Type A

If you have type A blood then you could be predisposed to medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, according to Dr. Lam, specialist in nutritional and anti-aging medicine. According to the Blood Type nutritional plan it is important that you eat foods that are as fresh, organic, and pure as possible. This may mean that a vegetarian diet works best for you, although chicken and turkey is acceptable. If you are used to eating meat then you've probably found that you tend to feel sluggish after meals. This is because type A's find it difficult to digest meat due to a low stomach acid content. Dr. D'Adamo recommends that people with type A blood try to avoid dairy foods as they can cause your metabolism to slow down, although small amounts of cultured dairy product, yogurt, mozzarella cheese, and nonfat sour cream is acceptable. Leafy vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower as well as tomatoes are excellent for you. So are deep water fish, except coastal fish and shellfish.

Blood Type B

People with type B blood have one of the healthiest blood groups. You will probably find that you avoid many of the severe diseases, like cancer and heart disease, but could potentially be prone to immune system disorders like lupus and chronic fatigue syndrome, according to Dr. D'Adamo. The best diet for you is one that is balanced and wholesome. While there are not many limitations for you in the blood type diet, try to avoid foods such as lentils, peanuts, sesame seeds, corn, and buckwheat, as these are the things that will cause you to gain the most weight, according to the University of Oregon. Chicken is also to be avoided as it can contribute to your susceptibility to immune disorders. Lamb, mutton, rabbit, beef, and venison are great meats for you as they help to boost the immune system. All dairy products except for ice cream, blue cheese, and American cheese are acceptable, as are green leafy veggies, bananas, grapes, and plums.

Blood Type AB

This is a mixture of both A and B blood types and it can be a bit more difficult to predict the foods that are best for you, according to Dr. D'Adamo. This means that you will probably do well with a combination of type A and B food lists. Generally you will do well with grains and rice, rather than pasta, and tofu is an excellent protein supplement for you. You can eat seeds and nuts, but in moderation, and be aware of the size and frequency of meat portions.

Blood Type O

If you have type O blood and love meat, then you are lucky because you can digest it easily, according to Dr. Lam. You should make sure however that the meat, chicken, and fish you eat is lean and chemical free. Breads, grains, and beans are your downfall when it comes to weight gain, and wheat can have a tendency to interfere with your insulin efficiency. The main difficulty for you is that you need to restrict dairy products as your metabolism does not break them down efficiently.
