As you age, the collagen and elastin fibers that keep skin plump and firm begin to deteriorate, according to the American Academy of Dermatology or AAD. This weakening can cause facial and neck skin to sag and appear droopy or flabby. Gravity may further drag down already loose skin. A healthy lifestyle, topical creams, facial rejuvenation procedures may all help to improve the appearance of sagging skin on the neck.

Causes

Genetics, nutrition and sun exposure are among the factors that influence skin changes. Sun-exposed areas of the skin are more vulnerable to changes in connective tissue that weaken the skin's elasticity and strength, reports the University of Maryland Medical Center or UMMC.

Solutions

Certain antioxidant lotions, creams and ointments may help stimulate collagen production and improve the signs of aging skin, notes the University of Maryland Medical Center. Tretinoin, brand name Retin-A is a prescription-only topical cream approved by the FDA to wrinkles. Tretinoin should be applied to the face and neck at least twice weekly. Topical creams that contain vitamin C as in L-ascorbic acid also stimulates collagen production in the skin, reports the Cleveland Clinic.

A procedure called laser neck jowl liposculpture and platysma resurfacing may also improve the appearance of sagging neck skin. During the procedure a small incision is made under the chin through which excess fat is removed. The surgeon then tightens the thin muscular layer under the skin of the neck known as the platysma. Tumescent Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that can eliminate sagging jowls and improve the contour of the face and neck areas, reports the American Academy of Dermatology. A face-lift is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat along the jawline and neck and tightens connective tissue and muscle that lies beneath, notes the Mayo Clinic.

Side Effects

Tretinoin may cause temporary redness of the skin and increase your sensitivity to the sun. Creams containing vitamin C may cause minor skin irritation and stinging. Swelling and bruising can persist for several weeks following face-lift, reports the Mayo Clinic.

Most patients can return to normal activities within 48 hours after laser neck and jowl liposculpture and platysma resurfacing. Patients may be instructed to wear a facial elastic garment for up to one week following the procedure. Minor complications associated with tumescent liposuction may include loose skin, dimpling, lumpiness, infections and numbness, notes the AAD.

Time Frame

Tretinoin can take two to six months of regular use before you see noticeable improvements in your skin. Tretinoin must be used continuously to maintain its anti-aging benefits. Improvement in skin tone and texture may be seen within days or weeks after using L-ascorbic acid.

Liposuction procedures are typically long lasting although aging and weight gain of 20 lbs. or more can alter body contouring. Facelifts can last up to 10 years, reports the Mayo Clinic. Laser treatments must generally be repeated more frequently to maintain desired results.

Diet and Lifestyle

Certain antioxidant-rich foods, especially those that contain vitamin C, may have protective and anti-aging effects on the skin, reports the Mayo Clinic. Good choices include fish, blueberries, oranges, green leafy vegetables like spinach, apricots and carrots along with whole grains. Managing your stress can contribute to healthy looking skin, notes the Mayo Clinic. Practicing relaxation techniques like slow, deep breathing and meditation can help you look and feel your best. Certain exercises are suggested to tighten sagging neck skin. One muscle strengthening movement involves sitting upright and leaning your head back. Keep your eyes on the ceiling and start a chewing movement with your lips closed. Repeat 20 times. When outdoors, application of a sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 15, all year around, will help protect your skin from premature aging.
