What Training Requirements Do You Need to Do Yoga?

Yoga is not just exercise, it is a state of mind. If you are fully present in the moment and breath mindfully, you are in a sort of yoga state. To learn, in a more official sense, the aspects of yoga that include meditation, breathing exercises and poses called asanas, you can study on your own or through yoga instructors at local studios or gyms. Speak with your physician before starting a yoga practice.

Function

Yoga poses, such as tree, downward-facing dog and wheel, can challenge the body's balance, flexibility, strength and endurance. It takes practice to hold yoga poses with a sense of effortless effort--working hard without causing strain or stress. Yogis use breathing exercises alone as well as in conjunction with yoga poses. Being focused internally and externally on a pose becomes a way of meditation. A quality yoga instructor guides you along the journey to a more masterful and holistic practice.

Styles

Yoga has hundreds of styles and formats, but some stand out as more popular in the yoga community. Ashtanga, Iyengar, Sivananda, Anusara, Forrest, Baptiste, Bikram, Ananda, Viniyoga, Kundalini and Jivamukti are some of the better known styles. Each one has their own requirements for teacher certification. Beginning a yoga practice as a student in any of these styles does not usually require any previous training.

Practice

Although yoga classes will vary between style and instructor, there are general guidelines that are helpful to consider. Bring a yoga mat, unless you want to borrow one from the studio or gym. Most yogis wear comfortable clothing and remove shoes and socks during practice. Tell your instructor about any physical challenges or previous injuries you have. Avoid eating an hour or more before your practice, depending on the guidelines of the style you practice. The most important guideline to follow is to listen to your body and avoid comparing your practice to anyone else's.

Certification

Whether you want to become a yoga teacher or just a serious student, you can take numerous workshops, retreats and special classes offered by a yoga studio to enhance your knowledge of yoga. If you want to obtain certification, contact the governing organization of standards on yoga, which is Yoga Alliance, to find out if the school in which you are interested is registered. The first level of certification is for a 200-hour registered yoga teacher.

Considerations

"Yoga Journal" contributing writer Natasha Rizopoulos encourages new yogis to commit to their practice a few days a week to develop a consistent and mindful practice. Practicing with an open and patient mind will also help you get through tougher yoga sessions. Yoga is an ongoing process, so expect to learn more each time you go.
