If you experience an allergic reaction while taking omega-3 supplements, it is most likely related to a fish allergy. Most omega-3 supplements are derived from fish oil, which can lead to an allergic reaction. If you experience an allergic reaction while taking an omega-3 supplement, discontinue use and talk with a doctor. In rare cases, a severe allergic reaction to omega-3 fish oil supplements can result in life-threatening condition.

Fish Oil Allergy

A fish oil allergy occurs when your immune system malfunctions when processing fish proteins. The immune system mistakes the fish proteins in the fish oil omega 3 supplement as harmful and produces certain antibodies to fight them off. The release of these antibodies causes a chemical chain reaction in the body that leads to greater production of histamine. Increased histamine leads to common food-related allergy symptoms.

Symptoms

An allergic reaction to omega 3s in fish oil supplements causes skin rashes, swelling in the lips, face or tongue, asthma, digestive complications and cardiovascular issues, according to the website MayoClinic. These conditions produce hives, itching, eczema, nasal congestion, trouble breathing, wheezing, dizziness, abdominal pain, nausea, fainting and tingling in the mouth. Increased nasal congestion may lead to sinus headaches, postnasal drip and facial pressure.

Fish Oil Consideration

According to MedlinePlus, fish oil omega-3 supplements are not recommended for use in people who have been diagnosed with a fish allergy. Although fish proteins are removed from omega-3 supplements, some trace proteins may be lingering in the supplement, according to the Food Allergy Initiative. Discuss the use of fish oil supplements with your doctor.

Severe Reaction

A severe allergic reaction may occur while taking omega-3 fish oil supplements, according to MedlinePlus. Severe allergic reaction symptoms include hives, shortness of breath, a drop in blood pressure, dizziness and a rapid but fain pulse. If these symptoms develop, seek medical attention immediately.

Prevention

Prevent an omega 3 allergic reaction by removing and avoiding the consumption of all foods and supplements containing fish oil. Use vegetarian omega 3 supplements that do not use any animal byproducts in the production of the supplement. Read all food and supplement labels carefully to ensure there is no fish oil byproduct used.
