Congestive heart failure is a chronic condition that may affect only one side or both sides of the heart. In this condition, the heart is not able to pump enough blood, so the rest of the body does not receive the required amount necessary for its proper functioning. Although various medications are prescribed for this condition, certain supplements have been found to be effective for congestive heart failure.
Coenzyme Q10
CoQ10, or coenzyme Q10, is a vitamin-like substance that is present in the mitochondria of cells in the human body. It plays an important role in making adenosine triphosphate, which produces energy required to run many of the biological processes of the human body. It also serves as an antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals, which can cause damage to the cell membranes. Although not all experts agree that CoQ10 supplements contribute to improving the condition of people with congestive heart failure, the University of Maryland Medical Center reports that it has been found to reduce swelling in the legs, improve breathing and increase the ability of such individuals to exercise.
L-Carnitine
The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) states that carnitine is an effective supplement for congestive heart failure. Carnitine is a nutrient produced in the liver and kidneys and stored in the heart, brain, sperm and skeletal muscles of the body. It plays a role in helping the body convert fat into energy. It has been found to be effective in heart failure because it reduces oxidative stress on the heart. Although more studies are required to prove this, the intake of this supplement has been found to reduce the symptoms of heart failure and increase the capacity to exercise in such people.
Other Supplements
Other supplements may be effective for congestive heart failure, as reported by UMMC. Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant that is both fat- and water-soluble, which allows it to work throughout the body. It is believed to be a good supplement for the heart. Creatine is an amino acid that is naturally made in the liver, kidneys and pancreas. It can improve the exercise capacity of the individual and increase body weight. Thiamine, one of the eight B vitamins, is considered to help reduce the build up of fluid around the heart.
