Herbs to Relieve Vaginal Dryness

Women who are going through or have gone through menopause often experience vaginal dryness. According to the Mayo Clinic, about 40 percent of menopausal women have symptoms such as vaginal itching, burning, pain and light bleeding. Hormone replacement therapy is available, but many women prefer to try natural methods, such as vitamins and herbs, to treat vaginal dryness.

Soy and Flaxseed

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), both soy and flaxseed contain phytoestrogens, which can help relieve menopausal symptoms, including vaginal dryness and irritation. Some studies, however, have shown that the relief may actually be simply a placebo effect. They recommend incorporating more soy-based foods, such as soymilk and tofu, as well as flaxseed, into your diet, as opposed to taking soy or flaxseed supplements.

Black Cohosh

The UMMC also states that black cohosh can act like an estrogen and relieve vaginal dryness. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), studies have had mixed results. While black cohosh may help with symptoms, it can also cause liver damage, headaches and stomach discomfort. Talk to your physician before taking black cohosh for symptoms of menopause.

Wild Yam

According to MedLine Plus, there is anecdotal evidence that wild yam supplements have helped women who suffer from vaginal dryness. There have been no comprehensive studies done, however, to indicate whether wild yam has any effect on hormones. They do state that some commercial wild yam-based products have medroxyprogesterone acetate, or MPA, added. This is a synthetic additive, and should be used with caution.

Sepia

Sepia is a homeopathic remedy recommended by homeopathic specialist Dr. Vikas Sharma. Sepia is recommended for women who have gone through menopause and are suffering from vaginal dryness, lack of sexual desire, hot flashes and a feeling of heaviness in the uterus. See a homeopathic physician for more information about sepia and other remedies to treat vaginal dryness.
