You can avoid uncomfortable gas by reducing your consumption of gas-forming foods. Gas formation may be different from person to person. It can be caused by beans, whole grains, milk, most vegetables and fruit. Eliminating all gas-containing foods and introducing them back individually can help determine specifically where the gas originates from.

Cabbage Family Vegetables

Cabbage family vegetables produce a gas-causing sugar called raffinose. The cabbage family contains broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and cabbage. Large servings of these vegetables can cause uncomfortable gas. Reduction of these vegetables may help with bloating and discomfort.

Root Vegetables

Root vegetables are metabolized into raffinose and fructose when digested. These sugars can lead to gas. Root vegetables include onions, radishes and carrots. You may want to limit root vegetables to avoid gas.

Legumes

Legumes are not typically eaten raw, but beans and peas are metabolized into raffinose and lead to intestinal gas and bloating. Limiting servings of bean and peas can reduce discomfort from gas. But beans and peas are heart-healthy foods, so if you find that legumes do not cause gas, incorporate them regularly into your diet.
