Information on the Sciatic Nerve

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the sciatic nerve is the largest and longest nerve in the human body. If the sciatic nerve is injured or compressed, it causes symptoms called sciatica, according to the Spine Universe.

Origin

The sciatic nerve originates in the sacral plexus, a large group of nerves located in the lumbosacral (low back) region of the spine.

Length

The sciatic nerve starts in the lower back and runs through the buttocks, down the back of the thigh and into the back of the knee before splitting into two other nerves.

Size

According to the Spine Universe, the sciatic nerve is 3/4 of an inch in diameter. EMedicinehealth.com describes the sciatic nerve as being the size of a pinkie finger.

Function

The sciatic nerve enables movement and feelings in the thighs, knees, calves, ankles, feet and toes, according to the Spine Universe.

Injury

According to Medline Plus, sciatica is a sign of an injury to or compression of the sciatic nerve. Sciatica is tingling, weakness, pain, or numbness in the leg.
