For those seeking a more youthful appearance, a high-protein diet may offer certain benefits. Opponents charge that high-protein diets may increase the risk of liver and kidney problems, constipation and colon cancer. Advocates cite a lack of research to support such claims, and encourage anyone following a high-protein regimen to include high-quality vegetables and fruits. Consult with your doctor before beginning any new diet plan.

Weight Loss

High-protein diets are commonly used to shed excess weight quickly and effectively, according to the book "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution." Weight loss is believed to reduce the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular problems, stroke and certain types of cancer. Weight loss may also allow for increased activity, energy and vitality, leading to a more youthful demeanor, Larry Trivieri writes in his book "The American Holistic Medical Association Guide to Holistic Health: Healing Therapies for Optimal Wellness."

Effects

Protein is one of the most sustainable forms of energy because the body burns it slowly. Because protein is not burned quickly, it helps those following a high-protein diet to avoid experiencing the energy crash you might experience after eating poor-quality carbohydrates, Dr. Robert Atkins explains. Healthy energy levels may promote a more youthful activity level and increased health and flexibility, Trivieri adds.

Considerations

Because high-protein diets lack an abundance of the sugars found in high-carbohydrate diets, they are less likely to contribute to bacterial or viral infections that depend on sugar for reproduction. In addition, naturopathic doctors recommend diets low in sugar and carbohydrates more frequently because the immune system is said to be weakened by the presence of excess sugars, Trivieri explains. A healthy immune system promotes wellness and a youthful demeanor, Rosemary Gladstar writes in her book "Family Herbal: A Guide to Living Life with Energy, Health, and Vitality."

Misconceptions

Not all proteins are created equal. Protein choices high in fat, sugar, nitrates or added fillers do not provide the same benefits as whole eggs, lean meats, fish, and poultry. In fact, poor protein choices may hurt your efforts to look younger, Trivieri warns. Gladstar encourages the use of organic protein sources to reduce exposure to chemicals, livestock antibiotics and pesticide residue.

Significance for Skin

With a reduced likelihood of bacterial infection due to the low sugar and additive content of high-protein diets, your skin tone may improve, Gladstar reports, and you may see fewer facial breakouts --- helping you achieve a more radiant, youthful complexion.
