Atomic Volleyball is a youth volleyball program that specializes in teaching and organizing the game for youngsters between the ages of 8 and 12. Atomic Volleyball emphasizes skill development, player participation, enjoyment and sportsmanship. The game is played on a smaller court that is more appropriate for younger players.

Serve-and-Play

One of the primary goals of Atomic Volleyball is to create long rallies. One of the ways to do this is to encourage the server to join the play immediately after serving. Because the game involves only four players per team, it is easy to find your place on the court. In this drill, the server take three practice serves and after the third serve has landed in the court, she joins the game in the right rear position. To make sure she is aware, the players who are receiving the serve must try to hit to the server's position so she gets a chance to compete immediately.

Run-and-Jump

Little spiking is done at this level of play because players are not yet able to coordinate their leaps, get over the net and smash the ball. However, they should be encouraged to jump as high as they can when they are hitting the ball. In this drill, the player starts at midcourt and runs toward the net. As she approaches the net, the coach tosses the ball so she can reach it by jumping. She jumps and tries to hit the ball over the net. Throw five balls like this to each player in this drill.

Back Line Pass

Players have to get used to passing the ball to their front row players in order to have the best chance of playing the point correctly. In this drill, the coach hits the ball to the players in the back row. When the player in the rear right gets the ball, she tries to hit the ball to the player in the front left. When the player in the rear left gets the ball, she tries to hit the ball to the player in the front right. Do this three times with each player.
