Dental crowns, also known as caps, are placed over the tooth as a form of restoration. According to the Cleveland Clinic, dental crowns specifically restore the size, shape, strength and appearance of the the tooth. Dentists use a variety of materials like porcelain or gold to make the crown.
Indications
According to the Cleveland Clinic, dental crowns are indicated in the following dental conditions: to protect a weak tooth, to cover a dental implant, to cover discolored or broken teeth and to hold a dental bridge in place. You should go to your dentist to determine whether you need a dental crown.
Types
According to the Consumer Guide to Dentistry, a variety of crowns are available, including porcelain fused to metal, all ceramic and gold crown types. The porcelain-fused-to-metal crown is strong and esthetically pleasing. Unfortunately, over time, the metal portion of the crown may show. All-ceramic crowns are the most popular choice of material for crowns. Because there is no need for a metal base, the all-ceramic crown does not have to be as thick, and it looks better. Gold crowns are not as esthetically pleasing but last longer.
Preparation
Before getting a dental crown, certain steps must be taken. According to the Cleveland Clinic, two dental visits are necessary. At your first visit, your dentist examines your teeth and prepares them to receive a crown. The dentist files your tooth down to make room for the crown. An impression (replica) of your teeth will be made using a paste or putty. The impression is then sent to a dental laboratory where the crown is made. At the second visit, the dental crown is fitted and cemented over the tooth.
Problems
A couple of problems can result after the dental crown is placed. According to the Cleveland Clinic, they include discomfort, sensitivity and a chipped or loose crown. Allergic reactions from dental crowns are rare.
Cost
According to the Consumer Guide to Dentistry, the cost of dental crowns depend on the dentist, location and training of the dental technologist. The price for a dental crown ranges from $1,000 to $3,500.
