Mineral oil is a transparent oily liquid obtained usually by distilling petroleum and used for treating constipation according to Medline Plus. It is also called liquid petrolatum and white mineral oil. Mineral oil has several uses as a laxative, for skin conditions and for ear wax removal. Use mineral oil in moderation as it can be poisonous if overdosed.

Constipation

Mineral oil is used to provide relief from constipation in certain situations, but not recommended on a regular basis as it can cause deficiencies in fat soluble vitamins. It is considered to be a lubricant laxative that coats the surface of the stools to hold in the water and move it out of the body easier, according to the American Family of Physicians.

Skin Conditions

Mineral oil can have positive effects on skin conditions. Mineral oil helps to hydrate the skin by holding moisture in the skin and is recommended by the National Psoriasis Foundation as a moisturizer and topical cream for psoriasis sufferers.

Ear Wax

Mineral oil can have a positive effect on excessive build up of ear wax when used correctly. Wax blockage or excessive build up of earwax can contribute to hearing loss, earache and ringing in the ear, according to Medline Plus. Use a dropper full of mineral oil to help clear excessive ear wax. Mineral oil is also used for clearing bugs or insects out of ears.
