Ingredients in Male Enhancement Pills

Male enhancement pills claim to improve a male's sexual life by enhancing performance and increasing erections. Some formulas claim to help reduce premature ejaculation and boost libido by heightening male hormone levels. The most readily available products are herbal formulas found over the counter. These products are not without side effects, however. Discuss new treatments with a doctor or pharmacist to avoid drug interactions and other possible dangers.

Yohimbe

Yohimbe is an herb taken from the bark of West African trees. It is also an herbal ingredient in male enhancement formulas like Viramax and Ambrina. The herb is considered an aphrodisiac, but is not proven safe or effective and may have side effects such as increased blood pressure and heart rate, and kidney failure, when taken in large doses, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. More common side effects include sleep disturbances, nausea, anxiety and dizziness.

Spanish Fly

Spanish fly is an herbal ingredient used to treat erectile dysfunction. It is considered a natural aphrodisiac, useful for increasing sexual performance among men. The formula is derived from dried beetles and is among the most popular aphrodisiacs used. Side effects include urinary and genital tract irritation, which may lead to infection and burning and scarring of the mouth and throat.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo biloba is a medicinal herb that has been used for thousands of years. It is among the most widely used herbs in the Unites States and treats a variety of conditions, like dementia and PMS. Its benefits for male enhancement include increased alertness and improving blood flow to the penis. While side effects with gingko biloba are considered mild in comparison to other herbal remedies, blood thinning is possible, which may be risky for those already taking blood-thinning medications like coumadin or aspirin.

Ginseng

Ginseng is an herb found in erectile dysfunction pills like Ambrina. Studies using American and Asian ginseng show benefits in treating erectile dysfunction, according to the Mayo Clinic. The herb is a long-time component of Chinese medicine and is used for various other purposes like fatigue associated with cancer and immune system function. Its side effects are considered mild, though mania can result if taken with monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) antidepressants, according to the Mayo Clinic.
