Herbs for Hemorrhoid Pain Relief

Hemorrhoids are varicose veins that occur around the anus or rectum. They can occur internally and externally and may result from pregnancy, childbirth, aging, constipation or for no known reason at all. There are several treatments for hemorrhoids including surgery and topical medications. Herbal treatments are used to treat hemorrhoids as well. Consult with a doctor or health care provider knowledgeable about herbal treatments prior to beginning therapy.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is an herb available as a bottled liquid and as leaves that may be steeped into a tea. The tea can be applied as a compress directly onto inflamed hemorrhoids. The University of Michigan Health System explains that witch hazel has astringent properties that work to reduce inflammation and strengthen veins. Witch hazel is the active ingredient in many over-the-counter hemorrhoid pads and wipes.

Goldenrod

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the herb goldenrod is sometimes used topically to treat hemorrhoids. It is believed to decrease swelling of the inflamed veins. Goldenrod has not been medically proved as an effective treatment for hemorrhoids and should be used with care after consulting your doctor.

Gotu Kola

Gotu kola is an herb that has been used in Asian countries for centuries. It is available dried or powdered and as a tincture and extract. Gotu kola has been used as a treatment for varicose veins, including hemorrhoids. The University of Maryland Medical Center notes that it has been shown in studies to help improve circulation and strengthen the walls of the blood vessels. Unlike other herbs commonly used in treatment for hemorrhoids, gotu kola is taken by mouth instead of topically.

Ginkgo

Ginkgo is an herb that strengthens the blood vessels. According to the Rodale book, "Herbs for Health and Healing," research has shown that ginkgo is even more effective in treating varicosities when used concurrently with gotu kola. When combined, these herbs may also help improve overall circulation.

St. John's Wort

St. John's wort is an herb that is frequently used to treat depression. It can also be used to treat hemorrhoids, because it decreases inflammation and has antibacterial properties as well. St. John's wort is available in tinctures, teas and oil-based lotions that may be used topically on irritated hemorrhoids.

Roman Chamomile

Roman chamomile is a different species of plant than its more popular relative, German chamomile. The University of Maryland Medical Center explains that Roman chamomile has many healing properties to help relieve hemorrhoid pain. It soothes the skin and the inflamed veins around the anus. It is available as dried flowers, tinctures and in ointment form.
