Injuries often result in swelling and inflammation and require specific treatments to reduce the symptoms. Cold therapy is one of the most popular and effective treatment methods. While ice was one of the original cold therapy options, cold gel packs that remain flexible and cold for extended periods of time have been developed to replace ice bags.

Function

By reducing pain and inflammation associated with muscle aches and strain, cold gel packs function as reusable or one-time therapy tools. Some cold gel packs, such as the Rapid Relief hot and cold reusable gel pack can also be used as a heat pack, just by heating in the microwave. Other cold gel packs are designed for only one use, but reusable cold gel packs can be reactivated in the freezer or refrigerator.

Features

Cold gel packs feature a non-toxic gel inside a poly/nylon bag that protects the gel from leaking. This non-toxic gel allows the pack to remain flexible for maximum coverage on areas such as a knee or elbow. Cold gel packs may also feature an insulated liner on one side for comfort while applying pressure to the targeted area. Accessories such as pads or wraps can be used with the cold gel pack to keep it in place around areas such as the shoulder.

Time Frame

The time required to reactivate a cold gel pack depends on the quality of the gel. Most waterproof cold gel packs retain cold for about 20 to 40 minutes out of the freezer. If you're using the gel pack for heat, it's designed to be activated in only 45 seconds in the microwave.

Size

Cold gel packs come in various shapes and sizes based on the intended function. For example, small gel packs designed for localized pain and inflammation around knees, ankles or elbows commonly measure about 4 inches wide by 7 inches long. Larger gel packs for shoulders can measure about 5 inches wide by 10 to 15 inches long, while the biggest gel packs designed for treatment of back pain can measure more than 10 inches wide by 20 inches long.

Price

Reusable cold gel packs are cost-effective at around $5 to $10 per pack, depending on the size. Some companies offer several gel packs for a reduced price. Heavy-duty gel packs for healthcare can cost $20 per pack.
