Slicing the golf ball can be one of the most frustrating elements of the game of golf. Making your ball spin sideways down the fairway will cause you to lose yardage and confidence in your shot-making ability. Following some specific steps can help you fix your slice and hit the ball straight more consistently.
Step 1
Address the golf ball in your regular stance and look down to see if your club face is open. Loosen your grip and rotate the club shaft slightly in your hands to close the face if necessary. For a right-handed shot, you will rotate the shaft to your left to close the face.
Step 2
Move the ball a little toward your back foot as you set up for the shot. This will help your shoulders stay closed longer.
Step 3
Turn your body more toward the right if you are a right-handed shot, and the left if you are a lefty. Aiming left will cause an outside-in swing, resulting in a slice.
Step 4
Practice by hitting shots off the side of a hill with the golf ball above your feet. This will force you to swing along the correct line.
Step 5
Roll your bottom wrist over your top wrist as you make contact with the ball. For a right-handed shot, your right hand will be lower on the club shaft and will rotate over top of your left through impact. This puts overspin on the ball, which will help it go straight. Practice at the range until you find the right amount of rotation.
Step 6
Grip the golf club with the shaft in your fingers instead of your palms. Lay the grip of the club across your fingers and wrap them securely around the club. Interlock the pinky of your bottom hand and index finger of your top hand for a strong, secure grip. A stronger grip will hand your hands rotate through the ball and combat the slice.
