Most of the calories your body burns are burned during rest, including watching TV, sleeping and sitting at your desk. This does not mean you should rely on sedentary activities to burn calories because activity burns far more calories.
RMR
Resting Metabolic Rate, or RMR, is the number of calories your body requires to carry out basic functions, according to Calories Per Hour. This is determined by a number of factors, including your height, weight, age, gender, activity level and diet.
Changing RMR
Though genetics play a large role in your RMR, exercise and building lean muscle can improve your body composition and boost metabolism. Participating in sports, resistance training or cardiovascular exercise burns calories to build and maintain lean muscle mass, which will increase your RMR.
Measurement
An instruments that tracks your oxygen intake and carbon dioxide output at rest can be used to accurately measure RMR. This assessment requires you to sit in a chair in a dark room and concentrate on relaxing for several minutes while an attached mask measures oxygen consumption. An online RMR calculators also can be used.
