Vanilla syrup is made of sugar, water and natural or artificial vanilla flavoring. You can purchase it at grocery or specialty stores, or make it at home and use it sparingly in drinks or desserts.
Calories
A 2 tbsp. serving of vanilla syrup contains between 80 and 100 calories, depending on the thickness of the syrup. Thicker syrups contain a higher concentration of sugar, hence more calories. Vanilla syrup obtains 100 percent of its calories from carbohydrates.
Preparation
Combine 2 cups sugar with 1 cup water. Bring to a boil, then cool. Flavor cooled syrup with 1 or 2 tsp. of vanilla extract, or use the seeds of one vanilla bean. Vanilla extract and vanilla seeds do not influence calorie content.
Considerations
Vanilla syrup is used to flavor coffees, Italian sodas, shaved ice and other confectionery products. Homemade vanilla syrup can be stored in the refrigerator for up to six weeks. Follow manufacturer's instructions for store-bought vanilla syrup.
