Whether you are a resident or a visitor, Canton is full of fun and healthy activities for the whole family. The town is surrounded by scenic rivers and hills, making it an ideal outdoor adventure location. Canton boasts over 800 acres of parkland and is within easy driving distance of many golf courses and hiking trails. From leisurely walks to challenging bike rides, it has something for everyone.
Parks
Price Park is a large park in North Canton that offers activities for the whole family. Kids can play on the large playground, feed the ducks or fish. The park's pond is stocked with catfish, blue gill and carp. Walk or jog the one-mile trail for a healthy way to spend the afternoon.
For something a little different, try Weis Park. It has shuffleboard courts, bocce ball courts, tennis courts and volleyball courts. Skateboarders can visit West Park Skateboard Park, which has a four-foot quarterpipe, a kick rail and lots of ramps.
Farmers Market
Shop the Canton Farmers Market for healthy food. Everything at the market is grown or produced locally. The market offers everything from fresh produce to grass-fed beef and is open every Saturday from June through October. Besides fresh produce, the market offers live music, cooking demonstrations, gardening and health lectures, and contests of all kinds. Try some homemade ice cream for a cool summer treat.
Golfing
The Sanctuary Golf Club in North Canton offers a public 18-hole course. Join one of the many leagues at the club for a healthy, social activity. There is also a "Hole in One Club" for the players who manage to accomplish such a feat.
The Quarry Golf Club offers an 18-hole quarry course. Built on a quarry, the course boasts cliffs, streams and natural lakes. The club also hosts leagues and tournaments throughout the year.
Hiking
Canton has an abundance of public parks with hiking trails. Try the Olde Muskinghum Trail that runs next to the Tuscarawas River. It offers scenic river and waterfall views and passes through the historic Canal Fulton section of town.
The Wilderness Center, a non-profit organization located in Wilmot, maintains over 10 miles of hiking trails. Take a hike through old-growth forests, prairies, lakes and ponds, and end at an observation tower.
Swimming
Ohio may be cold for much of the year, but when the summer comes around the temperatures can really heat up. Cool down with a swim in the pool at Dogwood Park in North Canton. There is a separate wading pool for children. Or try the Massillon Recreation Center. The center features a 10,000-square-foot indoor aquatics area with two 20-foot slides. Kids will love the play area and lazy river, while adults will enjoy the lap pool. The recreation center is open year round.
